Symposium

NURPs West Coast and Polar Regions Undersea Research
Center, in collaboration with the Kachemak National Estuarine Reserve
is sponsoring a full-day symposium on the topic of Using Video
Technology for Fisheries Applications. Participants include
international and U.S. experts in a diverse suite of disciplines
and scientific backgrounds. Oftentimes, fishery researchers resort
to new technologies in order to observe or monitor fish in their
natural habitats. One such technique involves the use of video technology
to monitor fish in situ. Recent technological advances in video
technology have increased the type and frequency of monitoring and
fisheries research.
The symposium will showcase innovative ways researchers
have used video technology to answer a diverse array of relevant
marine and freshwater fisheries questions. Additionally, the symposium
will provide participants with an understanding of how this cutting-edge
video technology can be used to collect fisheries data which, in
some cases, may not be accessible through other assessment tools.
Symposium topics include an Introduction of 3-D videography
for fish biologists, High Resolution Imaging and Image
Processing for Identifying Essential Fish Habitats and, Applications
of stereo-video to the assessment of benthic fish assemblages.
The symposium is being held this week (Sept 11
15) at the Annual Meeting of the American Fisheries Society in Anchorage,
AK.
